NEW VIDEO IN PROGRESS
The Passionate Pursuits of Angela Bowen

Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Activists:

I am writing to let you know about a new video in progress that may be of particular interest to you and also to ask for your support. The power of documentary video is stronger today than at any other time in our history. Nevertheless, few videos address the real lives and complex experiences of black women. That is why I am writing to you about The Passionate Pursuits of Angela Bowen. This one hour video in progress is about a black lesbian feminist professor whose philosophy and mission reflect her coming of age in Boston in the 1950s; her achievements as a classical dancer and cultural arts educator; and her participation in the Black Arts, Feminist, and Lesbian and Gay Liberation movements.

Your support is urgently needed.
A donation from one lesbian feminist activist pushed the project forward. This past summer, Abod traveled east to talk with four feminist scholars and activists: Beverly Guy Shettal, Cynthia Enloe, Jaqui Alexander, and Ann Withorn. One interview from Bowen's days as a dancer turned in an exciting reunion after 42 years between Angela and Kenneth Scott, her dance partner at the Elma Lewis school, with whom she toured Europe in the early 1960s, during the time of the unofficial but blatant "no blacks on Broadway" policy. Emma Jones, a long time black activist in Connecticut recalls, in her poignant interview, the huge impact of the Bowen-Peters Cultural Arts Center on New Haven and the state of Connecticut (1963-1982). And in Kenneth Peters' interview, Angela's former husband remembers his first sight of her dancing at Lewis's school, and how it hugely influenced his drumming. He also talks of how Angela courageously dealt with her despair over the devastating loss of their first son, killed at age three when a drunk driver hit their car.

Your contribution will be greatly appreciated and immediately used to complete the rest of the essential interviews and to acquire the necessary footage and historic audio/visual materials. Not for Herself Alone: The Passionate Pursuits of Angela Bowen will bring a unique voice to classrooms and community organizing and make a valuable contribution to feminist history and theory, social movement studies, cultural studies, and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies.
